Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What type of collar is best for my cat?

The most popular cat collars are made from soft nylon, velvet or cotton and are suitable for indoor and outdoor cats and kittens. When choosing a cat collar make sure that you have adequate adjustment for the growth of your pet.

Breakaway cat collars are the safest option for outdoor cats, as they release under pulling pressure, preventing strangulation if caught on objects  or bushes in gardens and parks.

Stretch cat collars also are a good option as they have a safety mechanism and stretch instead of releasing completely, allowing for some flexibility.

Traditional buckle style collars are generally not recommended for outdoor cats due to the risk of getting stuck in objects, bushes or trees.

How loose should my cat's collar be?
A cat's collar should be snug but not tight. Ensure it is loose enough for you to easily slip two fingers between the collar and the neck to prevent choking - but not too loose that the collar rotates around their neck.

Make sure the cat collar fits perfectly. A tight collar on your pet can cause skin irritation, even hair loss and breathing problems. So check the collar fit regularly especially with growing kittens or fast growing cats.

Why do some cat collars have a bell?
A bell on a cat collar primarily serves to alert wildlife of a cat's presence, thereby helping to reduce the number of small animals or birds caught cats. This is very useful if your cat likes to frequently roam outdoors.

In larger homes, the bell sound also helps the owner to locate their cats who love to hide in - out of reach places.

How do I keep the cat collar clean?
Remove the collar from your cat or kitten and wash in warm water with mild soap. Then rinse the collar in cold water and allow to air dry before putting the collar back onto your pet.
